Is La Ventana safe?
What catches visitors out in La Ventana is the road after dark, the arroyos in a summer storm and the wind on the water. Drive in daylight, never cross moving water, and learn with a school. Check your government's travel advice for Baja California Sur before you go.
On the road
- Roads are mostly unfenced; cattle and goats wander onto them.
- From Los Cabos, land early enough to drive in daylight.
- Watch for speed bumps through the small towns.
Storms and arroyos
- Late summer is hurricane season; the danger is flooding.
- An arroyo can rise in minutes: never drive or walk through moving water.
- Summer storms reach the arroyos around 1 pm: travel early.
Help and the water
- 911 is Mexico's emergency line.
- The clinic in town is small; serious cases go to La Paz, about an hour away.
- Learn to kite or wing with a school: radio helmet, safety release, someone reading the gusts.
